on the docket: week of 20 march

i’m having writer’s block, but not the one where you can’t think of anything good to say, but the one where you have so many possible things you could talk about it all leaks out of your brain too quickly to capture it.

conveniently, i have the perfect soundtrack to such a mood: peter bjorn & john’s (aptly named) album writer’s block.

so here is what we’re looking forward to this week [even though we're about halfway through]

- rediscovering music [see above] and getting awesome new albums from the library
- making curtains for the home office
- going to a fuel/friends house show to see david bazan play
- pilates class with the ever fun megan
- getting my dough hook for my mixer so i can attempt focaccia bread
- cooking two new recipes for dinnah [mll!]
- my 30th birthday bingo extravaganza on saturday
- the annual family march birthday dinner on sunday
- getting supplies for the next phase of decorennovation 2011 – painting the bedroom and making floating shelves for the office.
- redesigning the fixer website

the dilemma.

the home office made some serious headway last night in decorennovation 2011. i’ll share some in progress pics soon, and final photos once it’s complete (hopefully in the next few weeks; there are shelves to be built still). but with a spanking new desk (sidenote: spanking new? i was about to ask where that came from, and as i was typing the question i realized that it most likely comes from the spanking of new babies. brills.) ——

i hate it when long asides punctuated by parentheses make me lose my train of thought.

so.

as i was saying, i used to use the surface if my $15 garage sale desk for my mousepad, and it worked great. but with my newly lacquered and pimped out desk, a rodent-related rug is a necessity.

i trolled etsy for something that would suit my style (pronounced in my head as “staaahl”) and i found my head spinning between these two beauties:

Option A:

aren’t they lovely? i can picture both of them underfoot my virtual vermin, letting it cruise around with ease.

in the spirit of appropriate decision making, i should really list pros and cons for each, but honestly — there are no cons. they both rock, so here are the pros:

Option A:

totally fits my style (mid-century modern)
uber cheap and made well
goes with the colors of the room
bonus: this was the actual fabric we used to make my niece’s dress for my wedding, and features (of course) our exact wedding colors.

Option B:

fits my style in a less direct way but appeals to my love of simplicity
uber cheap and made well
coordinates with the other wood grains in my office
i used to have this pattern as my macbook background

so, the big question is:

seriously, how many ways are there to say the word “mouse”?

ha.

just kidding.

which animal apartment (mousepad) should i buy?

school supplies, a beginning.

don’t EVEN get me started on my love for school supplies. one of the many benefits of my chosen profession is the opportunity, nay, necessity of buying new supplies each school year.

it reminds me of one of my favorite films, you’ve got mail [don't judge!], when joe fox says:

“don’t you love new york in the fall? it makes me want to buy school supplies. i would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if i knew your name and address.”

[emphasis mine, for the phrase that makes me just swoon.]

a bouquet of newly sharpened number 2 pencils would smell, to me, divine. almost better than flowers.

until then, new folders will have to suffice.

i think these will be my new “to be graded”, “already graded” and
“dear lord, WHEN was that assignment due that you are turning in so egregiously late?” folders for each class.

we are fortunate enough to have a working fireplace in our victorian apartment.

as we became tenants in may, we have not had occasion to use said fireplace yet, and instead just gaze at it, dreaming of snowy days when we can light the fire and make smores in our own house.

this daydream, of snow, is particularly nice in the ovenlike june we’ve been having.

some days, like today, the wind picks up and blows in a specific way in our fireplace that wafts a fire smell throughout the apartment.

and on days, like today, when it is about 90 million degrees outside at 11am, it smells like the entire day is ON FIRE.

[which, for cool-temperature-lovers -- not cold, cool -- like myself, might as well be true.]

seriously, how amazingly cute (and utterly superfluous necessary) is this:

from office of the toothfairy, a superbly designed tooth fairy kit. this almost makes me wish my teeth were falling out again. one of my mom friends has to buy this, so i can live vicariously through them. HOW CAN YOU RESIST?

although nothing can replace my four polaroid cameras, the stacks of memories i have gilded in the familiar white frame, or the extinction of available film [sigh! panic!] that makes me incredibly sad, poladroid is my newest fun discovery.

now, let me get back to trying to find non-expired film for cheap (which i will buy with what money exacty?) while i can. at least my mio takes fuji film!
