overwhelmed | over it

12 December 2008

i went to find a picture that would adequately describe the feeling here at papers-r-us, and found it from a blog i frequent, who happened to post exactly what i want to say.  so i’m just going to repeat it.  [it’s not profound]:

overwhelmed barbie

i have been so swamped. i won’t even bore you with the details.
next week looks so wonderful from here.

christmas mixtape: installment one.

8 December 2008

one of my favorite wistful christmas music songs.   perhaps christmas music shouldn’t be sad.   i don’t know. but it is still soooo good.

confession.

desperation. i forgot that my advanced grammar paper/research documents had to be turned in in a folder. i realized this as i was in the computer lab, heading to class late, far away from the bookstore.

so, macgyver-like, i took an empty folder from the bottom of the massive lost and found pile in the computer lab to turn my paper in.

i’m putting it back when i get it back graded.

revelations.

– subaru, the car brand, is the japanese word for the constellation Pleiades.

– the opening of Beck’s song JackAss (a favorite) is the same as Van Morrison’s It’s All Over Now Baby Blue (also a favorite).

– coconut record’s new album, davy, comes out in january 2009. cause celebre.

thank you university of internet, department of itunes.

happy with the dancey.

6 December 2008

on thursday i was having a lovely dinner, christmas cartoon and kid scream-fest at friend patricia’s house with other friend sarah.  the kids were in sugar-laden form, having a wonderful time.  patricia’s son charlie, trying to wrangle the screaming little margo, asked if he could (and i quote) “get margo happy with the candy upstairs.”  chuckle, from me.

well, in lieu of hard candy, i got myself happy with this fantastically sugary dancey goodness from the british band the Ting Tings.   this would absolutely make a mixtape.  in fact, if anyone wanted a mixtape, i’d eagerly make it for them, this included.  my ipod has more playlists than anything, in direct opposition to the charming boy, who is a “play an album through to the end” approach to music listening.  thankfully, he likes my car-road-trip dj skills, creating my own top 40 instantaneously for the listening audience of one.

i digress.  actually, no.  i bounce.  and you will too, because you should definitely listen to this song now.

modern art 101

if you ever find yourself required to make a comment about modern art, just construct a statement around the words “tension” and “internalize”.

some ideas:

  • by scattering paper on the floor as an environmental criticism, the artist contradicts himself and creates a tension that the viewer must internalize.
  • i like the way this makes me internalize my tension.
  • i hope the artist internally chokes on his own tension.
  • this is a load of tense, internalized, bullshit.”
— so helpful for going to museums, or, say, being a college student.  i believe a few of my response essays from this morning’s literature test included some version of the above.
