monday ughpdate.

23 March 2009

1.  SPRING BREAK.  despite having to fill my break with an immense amount of studying for my upcoming senior comp exam,  i cannot even tell you how much i needed this break.

2. today was going to be filled with some studying, but i quickly vetoed that idea.  instead, today was sleeping in a little, mailing some packages, typing some letters, going to see a matinee, spin class, making dinner, a movie from the list, and bed.  best monday i’ve had all year.

3.  we got chick-fil-a to take in the movie with us, and we got all settled in and realized they forgot my chicken sandwich.  ah-booo.  the boy bought me a hot dog instead.

4.  part of our new year resolutions involved watching more movies.  forget self-improvement, and hand me some popcorn, i always say.  or, i say once.  right now.  ahem.  anyway, this resolution will no doubt stretch into next year, because we decided to watch all of the movies that have won best picture oscar.  we skip around the decades, because if i had to watch all the BPOW (best picture oscar winners) from the 1930’s in a row, i think i’d hurt myself.  thus far we have seen:

– terms of endearment
– in the heat of the night
– you can’t take it with you
– million dollar baby

this week we are knocking out casablanca and the godfather.  i suggested we make our own pizzas the night we watch the godfather.  any suggestions for casablanca?  wine is out, because i will totally fall asleep.  that movie is looooong.

5.  rewriting and sending thank you notes from christmas to the boy’s parents.  had written them out and apparently forgotten to mail them.  oy.  i’m a better late than never person on that.

6.  made my own envelopes out of an old road atlas.  sweet.

7.  addie’s second birthday party was on sunday, and it was lovely.  i made everyone admire the walkway in the backyard that i helped my brother shovel out from under dirt and rocks.  grill, cocktails, presents, cake, kids, good friends; i love parties at their house.

8.  my dad and mom discovered facebook over the weekend.

9. the boy and i spent some time with some homeless kids.  think i would like to spend more time with them.  looking into that.

10.  saw my friend kinsey and andy’s band houses play in denver.  they are so good, of course.  interesting evening, but nevertheless an excellent time.  we went to the requisite nasty 24 hour restaurant post-show, in our case – denny’s, for food that was overwhelmingly brown.  haven’t stayed up that late in awhile.  gt’s.  check out houses music here or their website here!  go, now.  you’ll like it.  yay for talented friends!

11.   i wore a cardigan nearly every day last week, and am now down to about one pair of jeans.  think anybody will notice?

12.  lovely dinner catching up and laughing laughing laughing with several old friends last night.  this year has been the year of seeing delightful old faces and meeting new ones.  i hope it continues; it has been amazing.

happy monday everybodyfriends.

facebook-woe

oh, i find this so hilarious.

so what’s the proper etiquette nowadays? my vote is for acknowledging that you remember something like what the person said on their blog/facebook/twitter/whathaveyou, as to indicate that you read the drivel they post on the computer in a sign of admiration, then let them completely retell you the entire story with details while you listen rapturously, because you are totally friends in real life and that’s what friends do.

because i loooooove it when people read my blog.  i do, i’ll admit it.  but i love seeing my friends in real life (apparently that is IRL in internet and 14-year-old-text-message speak).  i want one foot firmly planted in both lands.

well, what do you think?

hey mister deejay.

21 March 2009

have i told you how much i love motown music?

anyone who knows me knows how much i love music.  however, out of all the genres of music that i adore, motown has by far the most special place in my heart.  nothing is swingier, romantier (yep, i’ve decided that’s a word), classier, doo-wopier than motown.

i love it this much. [insert exuberant gesture of arms really far apart].

also, thanks to my parents, have a love of listening to music on vinyl.  i have stolen inherited so many classic records from my dad, and i have fond memories of learning all the words to the who’s american woman with my brother and sister while looking at the liner notes of the lp.  i learned all of the dance moves to the peppermint twist off the american graffiti soundtrack, which had been played so many times it developed its own skips and grooves which i memorized as part of the song.    when i finally heard the peppermint twist on mp3, years later, i almost didn’t recognize it without its character (hiss, skip, pop!).

the boy and i took a recent venture to our local favorite antique store BONANZA (seriously, this place is crazy with stuff) to look for old papers and postcards on which i could type things on my brand new typewriter i got for my birthday.  that’s a whole other story, my love affair with actual working typewriters.  anyway, among the birdcages, furniture, books, postcards, we discovered their small but substantial records for sale, and i acquired this gem:

samcooke

ohhhhhh, swoon.  i heart sam cooke.  for $8, i got my sam cooke on vinyl.

many people have heard sam cooke, i think, if you’ve ever listened to an oldies station, but you may not realize it’s sam cooke you are hearing.  but so many others haven’t heard sam cooke, which is an auditory travesty.

here are some of my favorites, but really the whole album and more are such fantastic music, for nearly every outing – sipping drinks on the porch, cooking, puttering (my favorite), whatever.  take my word for it.

[to download, just right click on the song link below and choose “save link as”, and voila – mp3 for you.  or, just click the link, and if you have apple quicktime installed on your computer, it will play for you right this red hot second.    instant gratification, that’s what i’m about with the music, dear.]

Bring It On Home To Me – Sam Cooke

You Send Me – Sam Cooke

Sad Mood – Sam Cooke

Having A Party – Sam Cooke

oh, i could post the whole album.

take my word for it, friends.  go.  listen.  immediately.  and then tell me how you like it in the comments.  go on now.    while you do that, i’m going to go flip the record over.

monday ughpdate.

16 March 2009

1.  my mom gets back from costa rica today, a little earlier than planned due to some unforseen circumstances surrounding the person she was going with.  nothing life-threatening, just lame.

she has spent the last week watching monk with spanish subtitles, using her laptop more than she has in the past decade combined i think, and eating brownies in the cold.

she’s ready to be back.

2. last night the boy and i babysat for addie and thomas so that tucker & julie could go on a date without either of the kids.  holy cow!  addie was a dreamboat, and even did her Addie Dance of Joy for us twice.  in case you haven’t witnessed this event of amazingness, it is when addie pulls up her pants at the knees so they are bunched around her thighs and stomps while giggling.  is is a sight. to. behold.

the little buddy was less than thrilled, but seemed to do fine for a few hours, you know, as long as someone was holding him in the Right Position ALL THE TIME – DON’T STOP BOUNCING MEEEEEE WHILE WALKING AROUND I MEAN IT!  then, around 9:30, that was no longer good enough, and the parents had to come home to rescue him from his state of starvation.

good things he’s incredibly cute.

it was part of our birthday gift to my brother, and totally worth it.

3.  in strokes of sheer brilliance, my classmates scheduled/rescheduled my last 2 midterms and a paper for wednesday, which means after my birthday, which means after st. patricks day, which means my birthday is no longer involving any drinking of any kind.

it does, however, involve a dinner at a surprise location with the boy, so i’m excited.

but all of my classmates in chaucer and history of the english language?  YOU ARE ON THE LIST.  capital letters.  except for the ones in my senior comps study group.  you’re cool.

4.  seventy degrees in march, folks.  i predict april to smack us around verily.

5.  yeah, i said verily.

6.  apparently it is no longer english as a second language (ESL) but english language learners (ELL).  main reason for this?  everyone else is getting smarter, and english is, like, their ninth language.

awesome, world.

7.  this past weekend i had two baby showers to attend.  i’m cool with the giving of advice (although i usually don’t have much to add except things like “be sure to get cable while on maternity leave” or “don’t forget to do things with your friends who have no kids, they still will hang out with you” or “stay cool”…and i’m cool with cake, obviously.  i can say, however, that i HATE baby games.  just hate them.  all kinds, any kind.  one baby shower had a few games, which went over well.  the other one, for one of my oldest friends, was delightfully sans games.  and we didn’t even have to pass the presents around either.  good times.

8.  yes, all of this is true.

9.  my niece addison refuses to say my name or anything near it.  she says everything else, and then points to me when asked to say my name.

10.  this week is midterms, my birthday, some school observation, a lot of little things to cross of a lot of big lists, and then…

SPRING BREAK.  whoooooooo!

i’ve never been so excited for spring break since i was in high school, about a decade ago.  i’d totally make a face and then pour a yard of margarita down my front and flash you, if i was, say, in daytona beach or the person who goes to daytona beach for spring break.

but i am none of those things, so instead, i think i’ll just celebrate with sleep.

happy monday, dears.

three birthdays, two siblings, one set of words.

“I, who have no sisters or brothers, look with some degree of innocent envy on those who may be said to be born to friends.”  — James Boswell

today is my brother’s 29th birthday.

My brother is one of my all-time favorite people; one of my favorite friends.

I could list so many reasons why, but instead I will just tell this story.  The boy and I were talking the other week, somewhat jokingly, about how, in dating relationships, the people in your life are part of the “package deal” in being with another person.  Having a good family, good friends, good connections are like extra points on the board.  One of the boy’s best friends, for instance, was awarded about 5 points because I could honestly have him around most of the time and be happy, and am sad we can’t convince him to move here.

My brother?

10 points, hands down.  He adds that much to my life, and everyone I introduce in my life are happy to know him.

And so am i.

“The highlight of my childhood was making my brother laugh so hard  that food came out his nose.”   –Garrison Keillor

My brother’s laughter, by the way, is never undervalued currency in my world.  Any time I can get in the same room as him, and laugh, my world feels much lighter.  My sister-in-law wonderfully adds to this, as she will lament and relate to me, and my world is again lighter, thus.

Happy birthday, my favorite brother.  You have adorable children, a wonderful wife, a tenacious spirit and a thankful sister.

“Sibling relationships – and 80 percent of Americans have at least one –    outlast marriages, survive the death of parents, resurface after quarrels that would sink any friendship.  They flourish in a thousand incarnations of closeness and distance, warmth, loyalty and distrust.” — Erica E. Goode

14 days ago was my sister’s 33rd birthday.

My sister is one of my all-time irreplaceable relationships; my forever friend.

Our friendship has been fought for; over many years, many trials, airplane rides, spilling stories over cocktails, not seeing eye to eye, seeing each other for the reality of who each other was, harbor holidays, downs and most certainly ups.

My sister and I are a venn diagram of friendship, and it frustrates and elates me.  I wouldn’t want it any other way.

I wish for her so much, and I am always glad to be her sister.

“A sibling may be the keeper of one’s identity, the only person with the keys to one’s unfettered, more fundamental self.”  — Marian Sandmaier

My words fail me, but what I can say is this:  my sister holds one of those keys, most assuredly.

Happy birthday, my favorite sister.

You have a warm heart, gorgeous children, and a world of opportunities; I am so glad you are in my boat with me.
